We need to spend today and save tomorrow

I get it. The United States federal government has high debt and deficit levels and something needs to be done to reduce our budget deficit and pare back the national debt in the long term. Despite this fact, we should not be cutting spending at all in the near term. In fact, we need to do the opposite: we need to increase public spending to spur job creation and economic growth in the near term.

Very Brief Note: Britain’s Approach to Restoring Fiscal Order

The U.K. government’s strong austerity program goes beyond what is necessary to tackle the deficit and is now poised to detrimentally affect economic growth in 2011.

  This will hurt Britons, as employment growth will likely slow and unemployment could increase at a time when many government programs are being curtailed.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, cutting deficits while maintaining growth is a very difficult endeavor, particularly when the economy suffers from a lack of demand.
